If you really need to spend some quality time, away from the hustle of the city and need some solace in the woods, Ranthambore National Park would be the best place for you. Located in Sawai Madhopur district of South East Rajasthan, Ranthambore national park is 130 km from Jaipur, the state capital. It is spread over an area of 1334 sq. km which includes Sawai Man Singh and Kaila Sanctuaries as well.

Ranthambore was established as Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary way back in 1955 by the Government of India, and thereafter, was declared as Project Tiger reserve in the year 1973 .Later on it became a national park in 1980. Situated in the state of Rajasthan, which is one of the hottest states in Northern India, the best time to visit the park is November and May. As the whole area if covered by the slippery mud and damp land, it is not advisable to visit in rains…..keeping this in mind, the park remain closed during the rainy season in India.

Attractions

Forest - The Park consists of typical dry deciduous elements and there are 539 species of flowering plants and numerous other species of rare flora.

Tigers - There has been a decline in tiger population in Ranthambore due to poaching and sometimes lack of water; due to lesser rainfall in Rajasthan, but still it is a best national park to spot a tiger where you can see the tigers roaming around in tree shed during day time.

The ride almost continues for 3 hours. There are two types of safari one is 20 seated open top canters and the other is 6-seated open top gypsy. Each ride costs around Rs 433 -650per personfor indian tourist and Rs 800-1000 per person for foreigner tourist, which is far more economical than the other urban expenses.

Ranthambore Fort - The fort was built in 10th-century AD. The fort is standing at a height of 700 feet above the surrounding plains. The fort is as majestic as other great forts and fortresses of Rajasthan. There are three temples of lord Ganesh, Shiva and Ramlalaji carved out of red stone. The temples were built in 12th and 13th century.

Lakes -There are three big lakes lies in the jungle. The largest amongst the three is Padam Talao, on the bank of which a hunting lodge Jogi Mahal is situated. The second one is Rajbagh Talao, which is often surrounded by the animals, drinking water on its bank and seems to be the water source for the wildlife. The last one is Malik Talao, which is smallest in area in comparison of the other two lakes; many species of birds are seen on its bank. Crocodiles and cranes can also be seen in and near this lake.

Animals - Along with the tiger, one can see a variety of birds, owls, monkeys, leopard, caracal, hyena, jackal, jungle cat, marsh crocodiles, wild boars etc.

How to Reach Ranthambore National Park?

Air: The nearest airport is Jaipur, which is 180 km from Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary.

Rail: Ranthambore National Park is around 11 km from Sawai Madhopur railway station. Sawai Madhopur is connected by most of the major routes connecting New Delhi with western India.

Roads: A good network of buses connects Sawai Madhopur, the nearest town from Ranthambore to all the major cities within the state of Rajasthan. Or one can hire a taxi or car/cab to reach there.
